Prison probed for alleged abuse

Lawyers for Human Rights are investigating prison officials at the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre for alleged abuse of inmates. These range from assault, torture and inadequate access of healthcare treatment for inmates.

An investigation into the alleged abuse of offenders by officials is underway in the Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria.

It was instigated by Lawyers for Human Rights.

Its reform programme head, Clare Ballard, said 16 offenders had lodged complaints with the prison management and later approached Lawyers for Human Rights.

It is alleged that the prison officials were abusing inmates during seizure operations and routine searches.

“These human rights abuses consist of assault, torture and inadequate access to health treatment,” Ballard said.

Lawyers for Human Rights called for an investigation into the allegations.

Kgosi Mampuru II spokesperson Mocheta Monama confirmed an investigation into the alleged abuse of inmates by the prison officials was underway

“On 1 November, offenders alleged they were assaulted by officials. A team of investigators were immediately appointed by the acting regional commissioner to investigate,” Monama said.

He indicated these officials were moved from one section to another and emphasised that action would be taken by the department of correctional services against officials found guilty.

“The department of correctional services is committed to ensuring the safe and secure custody of offenders. If any officials are found guilty of the allegations, they will be dealt with accordingly.”
